Alberta’s construction sector is under intense pressure due to a population surge and an existing labor shortage in skilled trades. The province added over 200,000 new residents last year, intensifying the need for infrastructure development, such as roads, bridges, and housing. Industry leaders, including Mike Martens of the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association Alberta, emphasize the critical need for skilled workers to maintain and upgrade aging infrastructure. BuildForce Canada projects that Alberta will need to replace nearly 25% of its 2023 workforce within a decade, potentially facing a shortfall of 22,000 workers by 2033.
