Hemp is more sustainable than timber – here’s how it could transform low-carbon construction

Hemp is emerging as a sustainable solution for combating climate change due to its superior CO2 absorption compared to trees and other crops. It grows rapidly, enriching soil health and requiring less water, making it ideal for eco-friendly construction materials like hemp lime and insulation panels. These materials not only store CO2 but also have a lower embodied carbon compared to synthetic alternatives. Despite its potential, hemp faces challenges such as high costs and legislative hurdles, though recent changes in U.S. law suggest a growing acceptance.
