Canada’s Building Permits Surge in February, Reaching $11.8 Billion

In February, Canada’s building permits saw a significant uplift, marking a 9.3% increase to reach $11.8 billion. This growth was led by both the non-residential sector, which rose by 12.3% to $4.7 billion, and the residential sector, with a 7.4% increase to $7.1 billion. Ontario was at the forefront of this surge, showcasing a 21.7% jump to $5.0 billion. Notably, the industrial component within the non-residential sector experienced a remarkable 57.8% increase, driven by the issuance of permits for major projects across the country, including a new battery plant in Windsor, Ontario, and a dairy processing facility in Abbotsford, British Columbia, among others. The residential sector’s growth was propelled by a balanced increase in both single and multi-dwelling permits, with notable contributions from British Columbia, Quebec, and Alberta. This report reflects a robust construction industry poised for further expansion, with significant investments in both residential and industrial projects.
