Europe’s biggest cement maker steps up push for green concrete

As reported on Bloomberg, Europe’s largest cement maker is stepping up investments in reducing its carbon emissions as pressure mounts on the industry to rein in pollution causing global warming.

LafargeHolcim Ltd. is spending 160 million Swiss francs ($161 million) on 80 projects across Europe to cut annual emissions from its cement manufacturing processes by 15% by 2022, according to Marcel Cobuz, the company’s head of Europe.

Policy makers and investors around the world are turning their attention toward the greenhouse gases coming out of the building and construction industry, studying tighter curbs on emissions to meet increasingly tough climate targets. Cement makers are responsible for about 7% of world carbon emissions, more than all the trucks on the road.

“This is a priority program in the company and we are allocating a lot of our resources,” Cobuz said in an interview at the company’s headquarters in Zug, Switzerland. “The reduction of emissions should and will be accelerated. There is a momentum and we are pushing the innovation.”

The projects are spread across 19 European countries and target lower use of fossil fuels in cement plants. They would also replace the most polluting ingredient in cement, which is made by burning limestone in a kiln heated to more than 1,000 degrees Celsius. The chemical process itself lets off enormous amounts of carbon in addition to the energy used to heat the kiln.
