New crane safety rules coming to B.C. soon, says labour minister

Following a recent crane accident in Vancouver that resulted in a fatality, there’s renewed outcry for stricter safety regulations in the construction industry. This incident echoes a tragic event from 2021 in Kelowna, B.C., where a crane collapse killed five men, including Chris Vilness’s son, Cailen. Industry veterans and families affected by such tragedies are advocating for enhanced enforcement of existing safety protocols and the establishment of new guidelines, particularly regarding crane assembly and dismantlement. The government and industry stakeholders are responding, with discussions on improving safety standards and training to prevent future accidents.
