Grassy Narrows Chief Randy Turtle is expressing frustration over delays in building a mercury poisoning treatment centre promised by the federal government. Despite Justin Trudeau’s 2017 commitment and subsequent funding allocations, the centre’s construction has stalled due to budget overruns exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The original $19.5 million budget has ballooned to an estimated $81.6 million. Federal authorities are yet to confirm additional funding, leading to uncertainty and disappointment among the community, who view the project as crucial for addressing the long-term health impacts of mercury contamination from the 1960s and ’70s.
