Worker killed following Welland retirement home construction site mishap

St. Catharines Standard reports that a 43-year-old man is dead as a result of an industrial mishap at the construction site of a Welland seniors complex.

At about 2:25 p.m. Tuesday, Niagara Regional Police, Niagara Emergency Medical Services and Welland Fire and Emergency Services responded to the property on King Street near the arenas and curling club and Welland Community Wellness Complex.

A worker was found in critical condition after a piece of construction material had fallen, striking the worker, said Niagara Regional Police Const. Phil Gavin.

The worker was taken to nearby Welland hospital.

Just before 5:30 p.m., Gavin later said via email, a detective reported the man, who resided outside the Niagara region, had died as a result of his injuries.

The incident remains under investigation by police detectives, the Ontario Ministry of Labour and the coroner’s office.

There were reports on social media that a piece of concrete fell on the man, but Gavin was unable to confirm this.

He was also unable to confirm that a second patient was taken to hospital after going into shock from witnessing the incident.

The construction site is the future home of The Grand Canal Retirement Residence, a 130-unit retirement home geared toward seniors.

The construction area sits along the east bank of the Welland Recreational Canal.

The facility is being built by PlazaComm, owned by parent company PlazaCorp, and is expected to be completed by late 2020 or early 2021.
