West Hants confirms Lindsay Construction as main contractor for $15 million sports complex

As reported in The ChronicleHerald, during council’s April 9 meeting, following an in-camera session, West Hants council passed a motion to award the construction of the West Hants Sports Complex to Lindsay’s Construction.

In a press release, the municipality said they will be cost sharing the $15 million project, the largest such investment in municipal infrastructure ever, with the federal government, which is providing $4.4 million and the province, with an additional $3.6 million.

Roscoe Construction also bid on the project, but council ultimately decided to move forward with Lindsay’s proposal, despite a higher price tag.

The complex will include an NHL-sized ice surface, with approximately 500 seats as well as an indoor soccer field facility and walking track.

Construction is estimated to being in late summer of this year, completing in summer 2020.

The municipality is now undertaking a massive fundraising campaign to help offset some of the costs of the facility.

“Council believes this project will be the catalyst Hants County needs to realize its full potential,” Zebian said in a news release. “We are forever indebted to the federal and provincial governments for their kind contributions for which this project could not be achieved without. We also thank all (of) our residents for their patience and support.”

The contract was expected to be awarded earlier, but was delayed by council during their regular council meeting in March.

Now that the contract has been awarded, West Hants is expected to purchase land from the Windsor Agricultural Society, which operates the Hants County Exhibition.
