After its failed courtship with a Manhattan-based tech startup, Waterfront Toronto is looking at local powerhouse developers and high-profile architects for a partner to build the Quayside neighbourhood on the east downtown shoreline.
On Wednesday, The city-provincial-federal redevelopment agency announced a shortlist of four possible development partners, chosen from 10 submissions, invited to submit detailed proposals for the 12-acre site.
A winning proposal, replacing plans that were being developed by Sidewalk Labs until the Google sister company walked away from the project early last year, will be chosen by the end of 2021.

They’ll make competing pitches on how to turn the dusty former industrial site into a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood with housing, retail, promenades, boardwalks, cultural event space and more.
According to the initial call for proposals, the winning team should have a world-renowned lead architect responsible for developing the overall vision and strategy for Quayside’s buildings.
But the lead architect will design only the first of Quayside’s five blocks.
