MONTRÉAL, Dec. 19, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ – The Société du parc Jean-Drapeau (SPJD) is proud to announce that the Paddocks renovation at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, designed by Les Architectes FABG, has won the prestigious Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence. The journal of record of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canadaannounced on December 7 the latest winners of the 51st edition and the SPJD wishes to highlight this well-deserved honor.

The jury noted several aspects of the project in FABG’s award of excellence selection:

  • The complex logistics of the project, which had to be completed in just 10 months and the techniques of assemblage of pre-fabricated parts, including steel beams and columns, wood panels and demountable partitions;
  • The building’s iconic architectural signature that enables Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve to be distinctive on the Formula 1 racing circuit, a feature which includes the geometric roof structure reminiscent of the graphical lines of Expo 67;
  • The selection of local materials geared toward sustainable development, including Nordic Structures by Chantiers Chibougamau’s cross-laminated, bonded timber products, the installation of photovoltaic solar panels on the roof, the designing of a green-roof opened terrace and the creating of open spaces on the last floor, eliminating the need for air-conditioning.

The construction work currently underway is meeting the deadline that has been set and all the partners involved in the project are working in tandem to bring the ambitious initiative to fruition. “This award of excellence adds to our pride in being able to host the Canadian Grand Prix every year,” remarked Ronald Cyr, the General Manager of the SPJD.

Renaud Coulombe, the SPJD’s Board Chair, added: “The SPJD will now have international calibre infrastructures which will consolidate the City of Montréal’s status as a major player in the Formula 1 Championship.”

“We wanted to create a modern building that meshes perfectly with Parc Jean-Drapeau’s natural environment, while making sure it meets the technical and technological criteria related to the requirements of Formula 1″, said Éric Gauthier, partner-architect at Architectes FABG. “It’s a real honour to receive such a prestigious award for a project of this magnitude.”

As part of the renewal agreement for the staging of the Canadian Prix from 2015 to 2029, the SPJD made the commitment to contribute to the renovation and expansion of Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve’s infrastructures. The project is being carried out thanks to an investment of $18 million by the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’habitation (MAMH) and $41 million by the City of Montréal.
