As reported on DiscoverWeyburn.com, the construction of the new Weyburn Recreation and Culture Centre is giving promise to new programs for sports and culture in the city.
Jody Kerr, president of Weyburn Minor Football, said the organization has already started talking about a few ideas.
“We might be looking into resurrecting some different football leagues over the winter, maybe doing some indoor flag football or something like that for all ages sort of thing and we’re really excited about that because it gives a different option for our football people in town and our kids to develop even further and have some fun outside of those three months in the fall.”
Kerr said they even hope to bring in some CFL players to host winter football camps.
Weyburn Minor Football isn’t the only sports group excited to try out the track and synthetic field outlined in the plans for the new facility. The Weyburn Soccer Association is also looking ahead to the possibilities the centre will provide.
“The future of Weyburn sports, especially soccer, with our new facility that the City is planning to build, is going to give many opportunities for our winter program to just grow,” said Jason Roy, president of the Weyburn Soccer Association.
The new facility, which will be built on the old site of the junior high school by the Weyburn Leisure Centre, is expected to be completed by the fall of 2021.
