EllisDon has been appointed to coordinate the wildfire debris removal in Jasper, Alberta, where a July wildfire destroyed one-third of the town’s structures. The company, selected by insurers for its expertise in handling disaster recovery, has organized a tender process to secure debris removal vendors. The costs, covered by insurance for insured properties, will be determined by factors such as property size and structure count, with EllisDon aiming to provide optimal pricing due to the project’s scale. For uninsured properties, pricing will be addressed on a case-by-case basis. A major logistical challenge is Jasper’s lack of a local landfill, requiring debris to be transported to Hinton’s West Yellowhead Regional Landfill, which has daily material limitations. EllisDon is exploring contingency solutions to avoid delays in the disposal process. Local contractors, including Jasper Concrete, have expressed interest in participating in the cleanup, with operations expected to progress based on the availability of labor and equipment. Some local workers have already resumed operations, with many living in temporary accommodations.
