Construction begins at Exeter Weather Radar Station

A $4 million project to replace the Exeter Weather Radar Station has begun, part of a $93 million initiative by Environment and Climate Change Canada to replace and upgrade 23 weather stations across the country.

Pat Wong, a special advisor with the Radar Replacement Program, told the Times-Advance last week the replacement project is a seven-year plan to replace its radar infrastructure with a new modern dual polarization radar system. The new system will cover a greater area and come up with much improved data, Wong said.

Right now, preliminary work such as foundation replacement is being done at the Exeter station, about nine kilometres east of Exeter at Thames Road and Hern Line. In the spring and summer, everything will be replaced – the tower, radome and the radar system.

The Exeter Weather Radar Station was one of the first in the country, Wong said, constructed in the mid-1970s. The existing Doppler radar system was installed in 2000, and Wong said it is getting to the end of its lifespan. The replacement will give the Exeter station – and stations across Canada – the latest in weather radar technology.

There are eight weather radar stations in Ontario, with the next closest to Exeter in King City near Toronto. Canada and the U.S. also share data from each country’s stations.

Once the new system is installed at the Exeter station Wong said the data gathered will be of a higher quality. She said the new system will be able to look at precipitation in two dimensions instead of one, giving meteorologists a better idea of what kind of precipitation they are dealing with. Even objects such as flocks of birds and tornado debris will show up much more clearly with the new system, Wong said.

The range covered will also double with the new system. Right now, the range is 120 kilometres; the new radars will have a range of 240 kilometres, Wong said. The Exeter station covers most of Southwestern Ontario.
