Cape Breton University to construct welcome centre

Cape Breton University is constructing a student welcome centre in its great hall, intending for it to serve as a first point of contact for anyone seeking information about programs or services on campus.
The university has issued a tender for general contracting services associated with the project, as well as renovations to its art gallery.

“They can go there and find out bookings and find out exactly how to find the location that they’re looking for,” John Mayich, CBU’s director of student affairs, said in an interview.

In addition to providing information for students, it will also be open to the members of the general public looking for information about the university.

The welcome centre will be located in the front right area of the great hall, in the Student, Culture and Heritage building Mayich noted.

The centre was something that was identified as needed during CBU’s recent strategic planning process, he said.

“One of the key priorities that we identified was investing in our students and students felt like, I don’t know where to go for that main information or that one central spot to help direct me to the appropriate department or appropriate service that I need,” Mayich said. “We want to make sure our students feel like, hey, this is the place that you can go to and this is where you can find your information.”

Mayich said key to the project is making sure that CBU is open to the community and that people know there is a first point of contact if they’re looking for information. He said there was a desire to provide “a customer service aspect” so that people feel welcomed and can be confident about knowing where they needed to be on campus.

They also wanted to make sure that students feel comfortable talking to other students, so students will be employed there, Mayich said.

The art gallery renovations will include mechanical, electrical, structural and architectural work.
