Support cables going up as Gordie Howe bridge work progresses

With the giant stay cables that will eventually hold up the new international span starting to be installed, the outline of the finished Gordie Howe International Bridge is beginning to emerge.

Over the last few weeks, a number of those cables have been added that link the massive towers to the six-lane bridge deck, while the towers themselves have further escalated in height into the sky.

“The Gordie Howe International Bridge will include 216 stay cables — 108 connecting each tower to the bridge and road deck when completed,” said Tara Carson, communications director for the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority (WDBA) which is overseeing construction. To date, she said, 16 have now been installed on the Canadian side and 20 on the U.S. side.

The two Canadian and U.S. towers holding up the bridge have now reached over 190 metres (625 feet) each in height, quickly closing in on their final height of 220 metres (722 feet), which should occur by the fall, she said.

Also noticeable is the significant recent progress in construction of the bridge deck on the back span over land on the Windsor side linking the crossing to the customs plaza.
